Care & Maintenance

Aloha Ohana,

Today we talk story ’bout puttin’ the Aloha into ya Bootube rub-a-dub.

Wha he says, Brah?

Today we discuss loving your Bootube with some general care, and maintenance, is whats I says, Brah.

Bootube Indestructibility

We’ve run over Bootubes with automobiles, dug them up out their 2 month burial in banana patches, thrown them off Maui cliff-sides, and bounced many off the concrete floors during their creation, but despite most of these Bootubes went right back into normal use with the smallest amount of care, it is in fact a myth that your Bootube is indestructible.

We craft each Bootube with Aloha just like we live our lives in Aloha. Quality control is our primary concern and occurs at each stage of your Bootube’s creation. However, by virtue of the nature of Bamboo, not every piece withstands it’s expected life, so your Bootube comes with a conditional replacement warranty. Does your Glass unit have any replacement warranty? Me no t’ink so, Brah! Just one more reason to make The Maui Wowie Bootube da kine choice.

Sustainability Stronger than Indestructibility?

Just because your Bootube isn’t technically indestructible, that doesn’t mean Bamboo can’t save the world.

Sustainability is the next wave to surf in the industry; our success is evidence of market’s desire to make conscious choices. But sustainability isn’t a marketing term for the Ohana, but a way of life – just as it always has been among all Pacific Islanders. While we love the fact that you send us emails describing the incredible feats your Bootube has survived, we also hope to bring more awareness to how the sustainability of Bamboo can help us all survive.

So please send videos or email about how it took you 3 hours to rescue your Bootube out of a puka, but just know we are just as stoked to share the real value of Bamboo and our mutual future together on Planet Maui.

It’s 4:19. Gotta minute?

Good, cuz that’s about all it will take to clean your Bootube.

The Maui Wowie Team recommends:

    1. Put the glass bowl somewhere you won’t forget.
    2. Empty Bootube contents into waste drain.
    3. Using clean, cold water, fill your Bootube 25% – 50% full
    4. Cover the hole at the bottom with your thumb while the rest of your hand holds the base of your Bootube.
    5. Cover the top mouthpiece with the palm of your other hand, and hold on TIGHT.
    6. Now SHAKE HARD, Brah! Shake like an earthquake – just do not let go!
    7. Ok, dump it out, and repeat until it rinses clear. Pau! (Finished)

What to avoid.

    1. Do not use warm or hot water to rinse out your Bootube.
    2. Do not use cleansers or brushes to scrub the inside.

Every interior of each Bootube is sealed with Beeswax. This provides a water-tight seal, and a natural protection from bacteria and molds. Resins and ash will rinse cleanly from the Beeswax surface in cold water. Warm or Hot water will soften or melt the resins and the beeswax, and the naturally occurring honey-sweet scent will get all stunk up. Scraping or chemically stripping the beeswax, and exposing the bamboo needs to be avoided so your Bootube stays water-tight and the life of your Bootube is prolonged.

Beeswax Re-Sealing Kit

One day the beeswax seal of your Bootube will need to be maintained and eventually refinished. The Maui Wowie has made this Do-It-Yourself Re-Sealing Kit as simple as we can so you can prolong the life of your Bootube.

Mouthpiece & Glass Stem

The daily wear & tear of typical Bootube users means that both the mouthpiece and the glass stem seal will have to be regularly maintained. When the mouthpiece starts to feel rough against your lips, it’s times to wax the edge.

To check the seal of the stem, plug the hole and suck. If you are drawing air, then it’s time to re-seal the hole.

Beeswax is easy to melt. It’s also hot enough to burn your skin – so wear some leather gloves or protect yourself.

Take a small amount of beeswax and roll around in the palm of your hand so that it softens up. Press some softness along the edge to be re-sealed, and heat until the area is covered and smooth, and then allow to cool. Reapply as needed. During the cooling, working the wax may be done with your fingers. Gently remove excess wax with a wood or plastic tool. Reheat the area to smooth and finish.

Re-Finishing the Inside

Re-Sealing the Outside

We use food-grade organic Hempseed Oil to seal & finish the outside of your Bootube. We suggest you do the same. Please avoid using another oil as some can become sticky, and smell funny. Call us spoiled, but we love the way Hempseed Oil works for the Bootube.

Just use a clean, dry cloth and rub on a generous amount of  Hempseed Oil, and allow it to be absorbed. Maybe 5 mins is enough, but 30 mins is way betta. You may even need to apply several coats. When the black Bamboo is done drinking up the Hempseed Oil, just wipe the excess off the surface with a clean, dry cloth, and enjoy.
